Two Common Mistakes that Prevent Job Seekers from Finding a Job - Sterling Career Concepts
Two Common Mistakes that Prevent Job Seekers from Finding a Job Two Common Mistakes that Prevent Job Seekers from Finding a Job Job seekers are often frustrated with the lack of progress in their job searches. Some of them may have invested in professionally written resumes. Many of them have wonderful work histories. So why arenât they being inundated with job offers? One thing that may be holding them back is if the job seeker assumes their job is done after completing just online job search activities. A job search can rarely be productive or effective without person-to-person networking and job search-related activity, i.e. informational interviews, phone calls to catch up with network contacts, and/or lunch, coffee, or drinks to catch up with members of your professional network. Attending professional association-sponsored events, networking functions, or job fairs can be a smart use of time in certain situations as well. The key mistake is thinking that just submitting applications online and connecting with people on LinkedIn is enough to get you a job. Filling your day with these activities gives a false sense of security. Another mistake is being overly focused on which role is best for them. Job seekers, especially recent college graduates and young professionals, should be open-minded as to their next position. Its best to think big picture is the employer an established player in the industry? Will this company name on my resume help create opportunities for me in the future? Will I gain transferable skills by taking this position? Could I accept this position and then move around internally in this company? Be open to different career paths. Consider earlier roles in your career to be stepping stones, not the end result. If your job search isnât going as quickly as youâd like, Laurie can help you develop targeted strategies to speed up the process, and talk you through any hiccups along the way.
